Day Trip to Geiranger, Norway

We leave our cabin in Gala, Norway bright and early to begin our day in fjord country.

Yes, I know what the clock says.. but look outside

it is bright and sunny.

After all we are almost in the land of the midnight sun!20

Aside: It is amazing how quickly one becomes familiar with an area, isn’t it. As we head off I no longer stare at the grass on rooftops! And, I do notice when the rooftops change and are more likely to be covered in copper or slate. Things one notices, eh.

Oh, my. I certainly notice this change in landscape.

Here (around Pollfoss) we are getting into an area of turbulent, racing rivers.

21Correction…I think “raging” rivers would be a more accurate description.

And this is August! What must this river be like during spring thaw!

(Hint: Click on any photo to enlarge it.)

Another change of scenery.

We now are traveling through vast barren valleys nestled between high mossy mountains. All rather barren looking.

In the distance we see some glaciers.

And…this is one of my favourite scenes ever…the landscape reflected in huge lakes.

22

For miles and miles we had been approaching this lake and I could not figure out where (or if) the land ended and the water began…or if there was a river leading into a  strange shaped lake. It was not until we were right next to the lake that I realized I was looking at a reflection.

23

My camera fails to capture the feeling of awe we get as we approach from the south to navigate the spectacular mountain drive into Geiranger.

Indescribably beautiful vistas from these heights…

waterfalls, green mountains, the height (almost like seeing it from  a plane).

Wow is inadequate…but wow!

And there is the tip of the Geiranger  fjord.

24

We luck out and are able to get on the first cruise of the morning. For the next two hours we will be out on the water.

25See…getting up so early in the morning was worth it!

26

Let’s just enjoy the scenery as we sail past steep mountain walls

and waterfalls. Oh, my waterfalls everywhere!

28

The water is emerald green and it is very deep.

Huge ocean cruise ships can sail right up the fjord.

Hey, captain…you and your crew look mighty relaxed in there!

27

(Not that I am worried, really…but this water truly is very deep!)

Adventurous hikers are let off here on this narrow ledge.

From here there seems to be no way to go but an impossible up!

29

I prefer to enjoy this stunning scenery from right here on the boat.

30

And here we are back at the tip of the fjord. See…a cruise ship is way in here.

32

But now…let’s go explore the village of Geiranger, Norway.

We might even make a new friend.

31Rather cute, aren’t they!
