Many a time we have walked along the Malecon in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and enjoyed the unique large sculptures which are strategically placed there to be framed by the blue waters of Banderas Bay.

They are quite striking126-2642_IMGa

However having seen them frequently, we somehow

stopped actually “seeing” them.

So this year we joined a guided walking tour

and saw the sculptures in a whole new light.

Join us for a glimpse.

(Hint: click on the photos to enlarge them.)

DSCF9383aThe tour begins at the north end of the Malecon (next to the Rosita Hotel).

Our tour guided is Gary Thompson…owner of Galeria Pacifico here in downtown Puerto Vallarta.

This sculpture is The Millennium sculpture. It used to creep me out but now that I know what all the symbolism is and heard the artist speak about its creation this is one of my favourites.

Okay, let’s have a quick look at some of the other scupltures.

Notice the shadow in the sand.

That’s what the top of this sculpture looks like.

Do you see how the color changes on parts of the sculpture? Any idea why? (You will have to join a tour in real time to confirm your guess…rather wicked of me I know!)

126-2649_IMGaThis was the first sculpture on the Malecon

and often is used as a symbol of Puerto Vallarta.

Rather looks like a child cowboy on a seahorse, doesn’t it. It is! but you will have to join the free tour to learn the story behind it.

This dolphin statue is a gift from one of Puerto Vallarta’s several sister cities around the world.

You guessed it…join the tour to learn which city.

My other favourite sculpture.

Maybe it is the use of color, maybe it is the subject matter, or most likely it is the way the folds of the senorita’s skirt seems to flow (even though it is made from metal)…but whatever the reason, this sculpture speaks to my heart and screams “Mexico”!

The last part of the walking tour takes you to the side of the church, where we find this sometimes overlooked sculpture. Join the tour on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 am to learn the story behind the sculpture’s creation and how it got here.

The tour ends at the Galeria Pacifico where you will be treated to a cool drink and have the opportunity to explore this lovely gallery which features small replicas of some of the sculptures you have just learned about.

The tour is by donation with all monies collected going to support a library in Puerto Vallarta.

Adios!
