Tango in Buenos Aires

What would a trip to Argentina be without watching at least one tango dance? You are right, it would be incomplete!

So…let’s watch some tango.

1.We could head over to La Boca, a neighbourhood known for its colorful buildings and street performances of tango.

2. Then we could join an evening tour to Senor Tango, a nightclub venue on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. Well, somewhere in Buenos Aires. It was night time and the bus took quite a while to get there, so I assume outskirts.

A bus will pick us up at the hotel so we do not have to worry too much about exactly where the show is!

Welcome to Senor Tango

We are here for cocktails and the show but many people have eaten supper here and are already seated on the next level up. We are right next to the stage…perfect!

If you would like to get a photo taken with some of the dancers, now is the time to do it.

008-

We met this couple from Brazil on the bus.

Ah, the show is beginning. And what a beginning…horses on the stage, flags flying, music playing, singing…as they do a tribute to the history of Argentina.

The evening is like a high quality variety show filled with music and dance…016-

There is an  intensity in the air as dancers perform…on stage

and in the air!

And it just would not be complete without the show stopping “Don’t Cry for me, Argentina”

What a wonderful evening!

Encore! Encore!

3. Another evening …this time an evening of very traditional tango…the whole show is devoted just to tango.

Welcome to Esquina Carlos Gardel

This time I know where it is…in the Abasto neighbourhood, just next to the big shopping mall (Mercado de Abasto).

The theatre is a classy, glamorous old building with sensual lighting.

Aside: None of my photos turned out well! This one at least hints at what it looks like inside this lovely theatre.  Remember you can click on the photo to enlarge it (and maybe see a bit clearer!).

Named after “the voice of tango,” Carlos Gardel, this dinner show brings to life the glamour and sophistication of the Argentine tango of the 1930’s. A live orchestra accompanies the dancers …sometimes one couple dancing, sometimes several couples.

Carlos Gardel  I must admit I did not recognize the name. However, after doing a little research, I realized I recognized the voice and the face from old Hollywood movies. Gardel was a famous singer in the early 1930’s. He sang ballads…sensual, romantic ballads that dancers tangoed to. (Hmm…tangoed. Is that a word?)

He died in a plane crash in the mid 1930’s and is buried in Buenos Aires in Chacarita Cemetery.

His trademark cigarette and carnations are part of the monument on his tomb.

4. Let’s head back to La Boca for one more look at the street performers there.022-

 Ah, to be young again!
