San Sebastian del Oeste…Coffee anyone?

Can you name all the countries where coffee beans grow?

Did you include Mexico on your list?

(I didn’t.)

Now I know for sure that coffee beans grow in Mexico because we were there at a coffee growing operation (maybe it is called a coffee plantation like in Malaysia or South Africa – not sure) near San Sebastian del Oeste, Mexico.

To start at the beginning…We had booked a tour out of Puerto Vallarta traveling to the historic mountain town of San Sebastian. Leaving Puerto Vallarta our bus traveled through beautiful countryside and up into a mountainous region where we stopped at the coffee plantation.

Aside: If all you have ever seen of Mexico are the fancy ocean side resorts, I tell you, you are missing out. The countryside is beautiful…green agricultural areas, mountains to admire and explore, rivers to watch flowing through spectacular valleys...but I digress

So back to my journal….

Stopping to see a coffee operation

On the outskirts of San Sebastian our group was invited into a little shop that seemed to be selling coffee. But it was quite a bit more than that.

First you walk past a mini museum featuring an old coffee mill and are invited to sample some of their organic coffee.

Lecture about local plants/fruits

Learning about and tasting local fruit

Our guide led us out back of the shop and into an “orchard” (I am not sure if that is the correct term for a collection of fruit trees plus coffee plants) and did a mini presentation highlighting the types of plants around us. There even were samples of some fruit for us to taste. One was a sweet lemon. Knowing what sucking a lemon tastes like I was not going to fall for the invitation to taste a sweet lemon. Lemons are anything but sweet. However a fellow traveler (a delightful gentleman from Chicago) convinced me to try just a little bit…and I was in for a surprise. A sweet lemon really has a sweet tang and I quite enjoyed it!

Next there was a little talk highlighting the types of coffee beans.

So now I know…coffee beans grow in Mexico.

(And they make pretty good tasting coffee.)the old buzzard

Just one person’s opinion.
