Best Thing about Dublin, Ireland

Ah, Dublin. Birthplace of so many writers and musicians. So much history here.

So take a guess.

What is the best thing about Dublin?

Or more precisely:  What do you think impressed me most about Dublin?

My guess is that you would have said The Guinness store and tour. Well, that apparently is the most visited attraction in Dublin, so for many, many people that probably is the “best” thing about Dublin. If you guessed Guinness…well, you are in good company as my husband too thinks that was the highlight of the city.

My vote for the best thing in Dublin goes to An Evening of Food, Folklore & Fairies … a Dublin dinner show held at The Brazen Head (where you can get your glass of Guinness…the above photo was taken there!)

The Brazen Head (don’t you just love that name!) is the oldest pub in Ireland.

And a pretty place it is…on the south bank of the River Liffey on Bridge Street.

Tip: If you take the hop-on hop-off bus, get off at the Christ Church stop and walk down the hill.

As pretty as the location and exterior are, it is the dinner show held here that impressed me.

I had the fish cakes as an appetizer. They were delicious (as was the rest of the meal).

Seated at a table for ten, we Canadians were able to visit with guests from Germany (Frankfurt), South Africa, Ireland (Belfast), United States (Los Angeles). That in itself would have made the evening worthwhile to me! A mini United Nations all at one table in the heart of Dublin.

Two musicians delighted us with their banter and musical selections and even got us participating in some traditional Irish songs. Top notch!

But the highlight of the night was our host…a historian, a researcher, a storyteller extraordinaire.

Between courses he told us the history of Ireland in such a personal way that one thought he was talking about family. He spoke about Irish folklore and told us stories.

I realize my description sounds rather “dry”…but be was so entertaining and informative. His presentation put into perspective things I had already seen in Ireland. Our Emerald Isle visit was much richer because of this evening of Food, Irish Folklore & Fairies.

“Experience an enchanted evening…” says the promotional material…and an enchanted evening we did experience.
